We believe in supporting and promoting connections in our community, so we have decided to introduce you to some of the incredible architects and designers we have had the privilege of working with.
Name: Tom Caddaye
Where do you work: Currently working as a sole practitioner - Thomas Caddaye Architects
What did you want to be when you grew up: An Industrial Designer. I actually completed the whole 4 year Industrial Design degree at Uni and then undertook a design internship in Italy with Alfa Romeo, before studying Architecture. Very happy I chose architecture now.
Something you have always wanted to learn: Bricklaying. Whenever I see those guys on site I'm always amazed. It looks so satisfying and a bit meditative.
What are you currently listening to / reading: Even though I share an office space with two other architects, I usually like to listen to podcasts while working. A go-to is 'Conversations with Richard Fidler & Sarah Kanowski' from ABC RN.
Question you get asked the most at work: Working as a sole practitioner, most of my questions come from builders - my favourite one being along the lines of 'how should we resolve this part?'. Drawings can't always cover everything and things work best when builders and tradespeople ask questions. I always encourage it and greatly enjoy the collaborative process.
Favourite part of the job: The people. One of the best things about small practice is how closely you work with and get to know both clients and builders. I've definitely formed some great friendships through my projects.
